I must preface this review with the transparency that I do not have a background in music. No entanto, I enjoy experiencing art in all of its forms. I believe that one of the most beautiful things about art is its ability to impact those who have little to no knowledge about its source material, and that is exactly what this performance by Addie Rose and Edward Forstman did for me.
Sous le Ciel de Paris was written for the 1951 French film Sous le Ciel de Paris, directed by Julien Duvivier. Addie Rose and Edward are clearly professionals, and their performance of this famous French song suggests nothing else. Forstman’s range on piano seemed to be in full force. The intricacy and attention to detail to the song’s instrumentals paired perfectly with Rose’s elegant, yet powerful, vocal range. Rose’s confidence in her singing demanded that I pay attention to nothing but the performance on my screen, which is exactly what I did. Her magnificent vocals were paired with her graceful movements and facial expressions to create an alluring effect. It seemed that even she was astounded by the beautiful music that came pouring from her lungs. Rose’s movements were not distracting, which is something I have noticed from other performers, but seemed to go well with the flow of the song.
The only extra thing I could have asked for was a little bit of background given for the song. The song started as soon as the recording did. While this is very nit-picky, I feel that some information about the song itself would have added to my appreciation of the performance.
Global, this rendition of Sous le Ciel de Paris by Addie Rose and Edward Forstman was impeccable. It gave an outsider of this musical genre a great appreciation for what music is able to bring to the art world. 5/5.
