AI Soundscapes: Saving Coral Reefs from Extinction

By Charles Cowie-Wright

The Coral Crisis, created by William Wagner, fosters a deep connection and empathy for marine life at a time when ocean ecosystems need protection more than ever. The film follows Ben Williams, who has developed an artificial intelligence system that analyzes underwater soundscapes to assess coral reef health. This innovative approach, which I had never encountered before, is presented convincingly, with Williams making strong, well-supported arguments about the essential role reefs play in sustaining life both below and above sea level.

Wagner’s direction is excellent, seamlessly blending interviews, b-roll, and statistical analysis to create an engaging and informative experience. The shot selection and transitions are simple yet effective, while Williams’ dialogue adds a personal, human touch that enhances understanding and emotional impact. The result is an exciting and inspiring film that highlights groundbreaking technology with real-world environmental benefits.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars – A compelling look at AI-driven ocean conservation. Well-directed, with expertly interwoven interviews and visuals.
