Forty-one years ago, Agnes Gund read an article about the arts being virtually eliminated from the budget of the NYC Board of Education. She had an idea. What about bringing visual artists to teach in schools where there was no art instruction? Studio in a School, the organization she founded, has done just that. The Global Search for Education welcomed Executive Director Chris Wisniewski to talk about the secret to their success.
How can educators keep up and collaborate with the newest trends in STEM education making use of the best tech and tools available to them in the 21st century? Scientix is an online portal service available in all official languages of the European Union. On average, the service gets around 12,000 visitors every month and currently has more than 10,000 active users who are fully registered. In addition to an extensive online community, the portal provides 500 teacher ambassadors based in over 40 countries around the world, as well as a network of 18 Ministries of Education and 9 National contact points, for STEM education in Europe. Dr. Àgueda Gras-Velázquez, who is in charge of the day-to-day management of Scientix, joined us in The Global Search for Education to talk about collaborative STEM Education for a 21st Century world.
Our environment should be important to all of us. It is after all where we live. The Green School in Bali was founded by John and Cynthia Hardy who wanted to create a school focused on environmental stability. The big picture goals for the school included wall-less classrooms and the vision that learning can take place anywhere, especially outside where students can connect with nature in a more meaningful way. The Global Search for Education welcomed Green School founding faculty member Glenn Chickering to talk about educating for sustainability, complex systems and lifelong learning.
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality markets are expected to reach US$162 billion by 2020. How can schools use virtual reality to make learning more engaging? Most of us don’t live in a rainforest but we do know that they are in great danger. Tree is a hyper-realistic VR experience that transforms the audience into a living and breathing rainforest tree. The viewer can see and feel the tree’s growth from a seedling into its fullest form and witness its fate firsthand. In a collaboration between MIT Media Lab and filmmakers Milica Zec and Winslow Porter, a fully immersive virtual reality story about a tree was created. The Global Search for Education welcomed Winslow and Milica to talk about the reality of deforestation and how their film Tree can help.
