Delay: A Surreal Thriller About Fate and Reality

By Juan P. Voorduin

Presented as an homage to filmmaker Ari Aster, Sofia Macias’ Delay is a mind-bending drama that delves into themes of fate, reality, and consequences. The film follows a man who gets stuck reliving the same sequence of events after going on a date where he begins noticing a series of strange glitches in reality.

From the opening shot, Macias demonstrates a keen sense of meaningful visual storytelling. The clever use of foreshadowing and intriguing visuals keeps the viewer engaged in the mystery behind the time loop throughout its runtime.

Ultimately, the film’s message resonates even more deeply due to its ominous visual style and quirky narrative sensibilities. Though Delay’s mysterious and somewhat ambiguous resolution may leave you with more questions than answers, you can rest assured that you’ll be pondering its meaning long after the credits stop rolling.
