  • Will AI Transform Teaching and Learning?
Recentemente, I was invited to be part of a five member panel at Google to discuss the impact that AI will have on teaching and learning in schools. My fellow panelists were drawn from the technology sector. As a historian of schooling and veteran high school teacher, I was expected to offer a brief perspective about previous technological innovations that had entered classrooms. Here is what I said to the 200 participants: Over the past century, every technology introduced to improve teaching and learning has been hyped as “revolutionary” and ”transformational.” Consider this list: *Radios in classrooms *16mm movies *Overhead Projectors *Instructional television *video-casettes *1:1 laptops *Interactive Whiteboards That over-promising vocabulary of previous classroom technologies triggering sweeping changes in teaching and learning continues in 2024. In speaking of AI recently, the Dean of the Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, dito: “[This Technology] is a game-changer for education – it offers the prospect of universal access to high-quality learning experiences, and it creates fundamentally new ways of teaching.” Yet there is little evidence that classroom use of these previous technologies forced educators to rethink, much less reshape, their teaching. Nor have I found convincing evidence that these technologies altered ... leia mais

  • Caminhos para o sucesso: new research shows “quality” as main driver of student choice for pathways
Phu’s view is something backed up by most international students in NCUK’s first student insights relatório, Transforming Student Futures, developed in partnership with IDP Education. In a year where we’ve seen some less-than-positive news coverage in the UK for pathways, NCUK were keen to understand from students directly, what their perceptions were about their study journeys to date. That could be a student on a pathway programme with an NCUK study centre – an international school, college or university across 40 countries – or an NCUK pathway student who has now progressed to study with one of 60 NCUK university partners across the top study destinations. Quality and employability The report finds 60% of respondents say the top reason for choosing to study overseas is to benefit from high-ranked institutions and overall education quality, e 58% cited the opportunities for career development, including increased employability and related monetary benefits as contributing factors. Maintaining quality is clearly key for top study destinations moving forward – the government-imposed changes in Australia and Canada are driven by a desire to focus on quality, and changes outlined in the MAC review here in the UK pointed to the same. The perception of ... leia mais

  • Janresseger: Doomed to Fail: New Report Examines Educational Instability Due to Charter School Closure Rate
Janresseger: Doomed to Fail: New Report Examines Educational Instability Due to Charter School Closure Rate Public schools promise a place for every child with services that meet each student’s academic needs with each year building upon the one before it. By contrast, charter schools, grounded in marketplace churn which promises to sort out the successful from the less effective charter schools, have come to represent educational instability as schools open and close—sometimes suddenly without warning in the middle of the school year. Children and their families need a stable education, but parents wooed by lavish and sometimes misleading advertising, cannot locate enough accurate information about the quality of the programs, the financial stability, and the operation of the school. Investigating the rate of charter school closures, the Network for Public Education (NPE) has just updated its 2020, Broken Promises Report, documenting what was then an overall 50 percent failure rate among charter schools. Naquela hora, NPE reported that within 15 anos, half of all charter schools shut down. These schools either received funding but never opened or shut down due to fraud and mismanagement, financial troubles, or inadequate academics. NPE’s new report, Doomed to Fail, confirms that things have not changed: ... leia mais
