Systemic racism pervades and plagues society, and it is usually directed towards people who are of a different color than us. Racism derives from the groundless belief that one’s own race is superior. But, what if that race is an alien race?
Directed by Elina Villemure, Human Race ISM is a three-minute short film that uniquely addresses racism through the concept of the human race versus an alien race.
Thomas is a human boy living on Mars with his parents and little sister. They have a tense conversation during mealtime, with the parents strictly forbidding Thomas from interacting with an alien girl he likes. It is readily apparent that his parents embody racism, and unfairly discriminate against the alien girl merely on the basis that she is different from humans.
Ultimately, Thomas refuses to accept his parents’ unjustified discrimination. He seeks out the alien girl, spends quality time with her, and enjoys the wondrous view of space alongside her. They stand there holding hands as equals.
Human Race ISM makes a powerful case combating racism, and drives home the message that we are all one.
I would give this film 4.5/5.
