From our friends at Bard College comes a classic piece of French Opera. Winner of the 2019 Concerto Competition at Bard College Conservatory, Hailey McAvoy performs Le Charme (The Charm), created by french composer Amedee-Ernest Chausson. Mezzo soprano McAvoy is joined by the accomplished pianist Bethany Pietroniro. The duo deliver a worthy rendition of this classic French melody.
Chausson’s works have led him to high rankings among the French composers of the 19th century. It wasn’t until he saw the operas of Richard Wagner that he expanded on his genre. Some of Chausson’s other works include Poeme de l’Amour et de La Mer (Poem of Love and the Sea), Le Roi Arthus (The Arthus King), and Viviane (Viviane).
This rendition of Le Charme by McAvoy and Pietroniro is a true standout among his renditions. It is short but sweet, yet at the same time truly captures the French opera. I give this short 4 de 5 étoiles.
