Rethinking AI: Who Defines Intelligence?

By Charles Cowie-Wright

Who Owns Intelligence, created by Juan P. Voorduin, is an informative and thought-provoking exploration of how we define artificial intelligence and how it challenges traditional perceptions of intelligence.

Throughout the film, viewers are encouraged to question the singular, human-centered view of intelligence. The documentary effectively presents the idea that other entities—whether objects, living beings, or even computers—may possess their own forms of intelligence. This argument is delivered clearly and persuasively.

The film supports its core message with relevant b-roll, though at times, its delivery feels somewhat formulaic and rigid. This is the main reason for my slightly lower rating. However, the film excels in sparking curiosity, leaving viewers with compelling questions about how we perceive the world—a testament to its effectiveness.

Rating: 3.5/5 – Thought-provoking and accessible for all audiences. Brings new questions to light that are often overlooked in discussions on artificial intelligence.
