Directed by Claire Imler, esperança e futuro is a short documentary that explores the lives of the people living in an orphanage based in Guatemala. The facility provides love and support to young abused teen women and their children. The film focuses on the story of one young victim and the owner of the organization, Tia Lilly, who strives to give the victims’ lives meaning.

Claire, 4,354 Guatamalan girls between 10 e 14 gave birth as a result of rape in 2013. How did you find out about Esperanza Y Futuro and their work?
I was introduced to Esperanza Y Futuro through Stephanie Courtillier, the founder of the non-profit, Integrous Women. She told me about the work they were planning on doing in partnership with Integrous Women, and how they wanted to capture the story of these girls to help spread awareness. I was instantly captivated by the stories I was hearing while I talked with some of the people from Esperanza Y Futuro, and knew I wanted to create a film to help give these young girls a platform to use their voices.
What did you find most compelling about this story and what surprised you most about the lives of these young people in the process of telling it?
I was captivated by the perseverance and strength of these young girls. They have all been through so much, yet everyday would greet us with the biggest smiles and so much love. I cherish all the time we got to spend together when we weren’t filming, whether it was playing games, jumping on their trampoline, or exploring the city of Antigua. In just a week, we were able to create such a strong bond, and it was amazing to see how open and trusting they were to allow me to come into their lives to share their stories.
Has anyone who has been helped by Esperanza Y Futuro gone on to create successful futures for themselves later on in their lives? What’s being done to prevent situations like the ones these people have faced from happening?
Integrous Women partnered with Esperanza Y Futuro to help break this cycle of inequality and trauma in their community. They have brought in training to the staff at the home to help guide these young girls and develop their leadership skills among many others to help them thrive once they leave the home.
