Gunta, what inspired the decision to omit music in a dance-centered film?
Interesting question! There actually is an original music score for the dance film, created by composer Reinis Ozolins. 然而, the dance sequences were filmed without specific music in mind, allowing the choreography to emerge organically. The score was then developed later to complement the movement. If there’s an issue with the sound, it might be a technical error—I’d be happy to share a newer version with the music intact!
How did the hurricane setting shape the dancers’ performances?
The hurricane added an eerie and dramatic quality to the day. Although we had planned and booked the Santa Ana station well in advance, the storm created uncertainty about whether we’d even be able to leave the house that morning. Once we arrived, we decided to embrace the elements, incorporating the rain and water into the choreography. The constant rain and the sense of the unknown brought a visceral intensity to the shoot, which mirrored the emotions we wanted to convey in the film.
What were the challenges of filming at the Santa Ana station?
Filming at the Santa Ana station during a hurricane presented logistical and emotional challenges. 幸运的是, it was relatively quiet that Sunday, and we had both indoor and outdoor spaces available for filming. The station itself was an inspiring location, with its constant flow of people and the metaphorical “roads to choose” adding depth to the narrative. Securing a permit allowed us to focus on making the most of this unique setting, which ultimately became a character in its own right within the film.
How do you hope audiences interpret the film’s atmosphere?
I hope viewers interpret the atmosphere through their own experiences and perspectives. The film uses abstract storytelling and striking visuals, encouraging the audience to find personal meaning in the imagery. If any part of the film resonates with or feels memorable to them, then we’ve achieved our goal as creators.
